Every freelancer knows testimonials win work. Very few have a system for getting them. The usual pattern is a burst of asking when the portfolio looks thin, a few kind emails pasted into a website page, and then nothing for a year. Senja testimonials are built around fixing exactly that gap: a form you send to clients, a library that stores every quote and video, and widgets that put them on your site without code.
Instead of touring every feature, I built one routine around the moment a freelance project ends, the handoff, because that is when a client is most likely to say yes. Below is how I would set it up on Senja’s free plan, what the paid plans add, and where the free plan stops being enough. Pricing and features come from Senja’s own pricing page as it reads today.

Why the Handoff Is the Moment to Ask
At handoff the client has just received the finished work, they still remember the problem you solved, and you are already in their inbox with final files and an invoice. A week later they are busy with the next thing. Three months later they barely remember the details that make a testimonial convincing.
So the routine has one rule: the testimonial request goes out with the handoff email, not after it. Senja’s job is to make that request quick for the client to answer and easy for you to reuse.
What Senja’s Free Plan Gives a Freelancer
Senja’s free plan costs $0 a month and is described by Senja as free forever. For a solo freelancer it is more generous than I expected:
- 15 video and text testimonials collected.
- A collection form, either simple or multistep.
- Invites and tracking, individually or in bulk, with follow-ups.
- Imports from 18 social media sites and review platforms, plus text, video and screenshots.
- Unlimited testimonial widgets from over 20 templates, added to your site without code.
- Unlimited Walls of Love, a shareable page of testimonials with a call to action.
- Testimonial analysis, case study generation and Reels made from video testimonials.
- Widget analytics for views and clicks.
- Export, so you can leave at any time.
The limit that matters is the 15 testimonials. For a freelancer finishing one or two projects a month, that is most of a year of handoffs, which is enough to prove the routine before paying anything.
Step 1: Build One Short Form for Handoffs
Create a single collection form and name it after the moment, for example “Project wrap-up”. Keep it short. A client who has to write an essay will postpone it, and postponed requests rarely come back.
The questions I use are designed to produce a testimonial that sells, not a generic “great to work with”:
- What was the situation before we started?
- What changed after the project?
- Would you recommend working with me, and to whom?
Then ask for a star rating, their name, role and company, and a photo or logo. Senja’s form can be simple or multistep; for busy clients I prefer the simple version. If you work with clients who are comfortable on camera, offer video as an option, never a requirement.

Step 2: Put the Link in the Handoff Email
My handoff email has three parts: the deliverables, the invoice, and one line with the Senja link. Something like: “If the project helped, a two-minute note here would mean a lot, and I’ll send you a draft if you’d rather edit than write.” That last offer matters. Many clients are happy to approve a draft you write from their own words in emails and calls.
If the request needs a nudge, Senja’s invites and tracking let you see who has not answered and send a follow-up. One reminder a week later is plenty. If you already record client calls, the call notes are a good source of words for that draft; I covered that workflow in my post on Fathom’s free plan as a client call record.

Step 3: Import What You Already Have
Most freelancers have praise scattered across LinkedIn recommendations, review sites, emails and chat messages. Senja imports from 18 social and review platforms and also accepts plain text, video and screenshots. Spend one evening pulling those into Senja so the library does not start empty. With a 15-testimonial cap on the free plan, I would import only the strongest ones at first.
Step 4: Show Testimonials Where Clients Decide
A testimonial in a library does nothing. I put them in three places:
- The services page, using a widget next to the price or package description. That is where a prospect hesitates.
- Proposals, linking to a Wall of Love so a prospect can read more than the two quotes you pasted in. If you build proposals with a template, my Better Proposals template walkthrough shows where a social proof section fits.
- Intake forms, one short quote above the form, to reassure someone who is about to send a brief.
Widget analytics show which placements get views and clicks, which helps you decide where testimonials are earning their place.
Step 5: Reuse the Best Ones
Senja can generate case studies from your best testimonials and turn video testimonials into Reels for social posts. For a freelancer, a single strong client story turned into a short case study is often worth more than ten one-line quotes, because it shows the process, not just the outcome.
Senja Pricing: When Free Stops Being Enough

| Free | Starter | Pro | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price (monthly billing) | $0 | $29/month | $59/month |
| Testimonials | 15 | Unlimited | Unlimited |
| Forms | Collection form | 3 | Unlimited |
| Projects | – | 1 | 5 ($10/month per extra) |
| Seats | – | 2 | 5 ($5/month per extra) |
| Own branding and custom domains | No | Yes | Yes |
Senja says yearly billing gives two months free. Starter adds, on top of the free plan: unlimited testimonials, your own branding through a Brand Kit in place of Senja’s, custom domains for forms and Walls of Love, HD video exports, Pro widgets, a Spin the Wheel reward system, testimonial autosync from other sources, a Word of Mouth feature that encourages clients to share what they wrote, a Zapier integration, and an API with webhooks. Pro adds team access with five seats, rich snippets for star ratings in search results, testimonial translation, unlimited forms and five projects.
Which plan fits a freelancer
- Stay on free while you are proving the routine and have fewer than 15 testimonials worth keeping.
- Move to Starter when you hit 15, or when Senja’s branding on your widgets and forms starts to look out of place next to your own brand. Custom domains and Zapier are the other reasons, for example to log new testimonials in your project tracker automatically.
- Pro is rarely needed by a solo freelancer. It makes sense for a small studio running several brands or projects, or if star-rating rich snippets in search matter to you.

Where Senja Is Not the Right Tool
- You only need three quotes on a homepage. Paste them in. A platform is overkill.
- You need client portals or project feedback. Senja collects praise; it does not replace a feedback or approval tool during the project.
- Your clients will not allow their names to be used. Many agencies and corporate clients restrict public endorsements. Check before you ask, and do not publish anything without consent.
- You want everything on one bill. If you already pay for an all-in-one client tool, check whether its testimonial features are enough before adding another subscription. For collecting briefs and deposits, I still prefer a dedicated form, as in my Tally project brief setup.
My Verdict
Senja testimonials work best as a habit, not a project. Tie the request to the handoff email, keep the form to three questions, offer to draft the words, and put the results where prospects hesitate. The free plan covers 15 testimonials with unlimited widgets and Walls of Love, which is enough for most freelancers to prove the routine. Starter at $29 a month is the upgrade once you outgrow 15 or want your own branding and domain. Pro is for studios, not solo freelancers.
